Back to What Is a Brand

The choice

What is brand positioning?

Brand positioning is the place you choose to occupy in the customer's mind compared with the alternatives they could choose.

In plain English

Positioning answers: who are we for, what problem do we solve, what are we compared against, and why should the right customer choose us?

Why it matters

A business without positioning becomes one option among many. A positioned business becomes the obvious option for a particular need, customer, or buying moment.

Example

A restaurant can be the cheapest meal, the fastest lunch, the most premium date-night room, or the place that feels like home. Each position attracts a different customer.

The Minibus Theory context

Business lessons from the street.

Every minibus has a route. It does not shout every destination in Lusaka. It calls the route it can actually take. Positioning works the same way: the market needs to know where you are going, who should board, and why this journey is the one to trust.

Related questions

What people usually ask next.

What is a positioning statement?

A positioning statement is a clear internal sentence that says who the brand serves, what need it meets, why it is different, and what proof makes the claim credible.

Can a brand target everyone?

A brand can sell to many people, but it should not speak as if everyone is the same. Strong positioning usually starts with a clear primary audience.

How do I know if my positioning is weak?

It is weak if customers cannot explain why they should choose you, your team describes the business in different ways, or your marketing could belong to any competitor.
