We Don't Respect Our Businesses As Much As We Do Our Stomachs
If you would not trust a mechanic with your dinner, stop trusting confusion with your brand. Your business deserves the same respect as your stomach.
Hear me out.
If you went to a restaurant and the chef came out in grease-stained overalls and said, "I'm actually a mechanic, but I'll be making your dinner this evening. How hard can pasta be?" Despite the fact that my curiosity would absolutely want to taste the food, my logical side would immediately doubt the meal.
So why do we do this with our businesses? Why do we trust non-experts with our brands? And by non-experts, I mean ourselves. Well, you guys anyway. I do this for a living.
If you are a baker, bake. If you are a painter, paint. You have no business building the brand any more than you have business answering phones at the front desk.
And no, I am not saying you should hire experts when your business is still a crying baby and you do not have two coins to rub together. I mean when you get past that phase. When you want to grow. When you want to scale. When you want to stop guessing. At that point, invest in your art, your passion, or your solution. Let someone else do what they are trained to do.
Every dollar you waste fumbling around in the dark is ten dollars in the right hands. Trust the value you bring to the world. Then find an expert who understands you.
Five years ago, Natural Kurls trusted me with their brand. I met a founder who was deeply passionate about natural hair. One of the hardest workers I know. At hair. She focused on delivering a high-quality product and excellent service, while competitors were still arguing about logos and colours. That focus grew the business fifty times in five years.
Here is the part people miss. She respected her business enough to stay in her lane. And trusted others to stay in theirs.
If you would not trust a mechanic with your dinner, stop trusting confusion with your brand. Your business deserves the same respect as your stomach.
Useful? Now score the brand behind the business.
