I Missed Out on a Huge Deal. Here's Why.

The deal of the week died on a wrong phone number, and my own refusal to pause. Sometimes the solution is the one you miss because you won't stop moving.

I once met a potential client at a networking event, the kind of person who had "I've been looking for someone like you to solve my problem" written all over them.

We talked for nearly an hour. They were impressed, impressed by how well I understood their problem, impressed by how I articulated it back to them, and even more impressed by the nuances I highlighted that they hadn't even considered. This was going great! Or so I thought.

As with all networking events, it's not networking if you hog one person the whole night. So, we exchanged contact details and moved on to work the room.

Now, my secret weapon at these events has always been simple: during the speaking sections (there's always one), ask a complex, deep question. Something relevant to the topic but framed in a way that makes it clear you truly understand the subject, and that the answer actually matters. This does two things: it makes you memorable, and it positions you as someone serious, because smart people respect smart questions. (Yes, I'm giving away my trade secrets for free. You're welcome.)

The Perfect Plan

After the event, I was certain that Mr. Client (as we'll now call him) was hooked. I planned my entire week around him. Monday: call him. Tuesday: send the invoice. Wednesday: start implementation. Thursday: delegate. Friday: celebrate the successful deal.

The plan was flawless. Foolproof. Until I made the call.

The Moment of Horror

I dialed his number. Nothing. I tried again. This time, instead of silence, a robotic voice, cold, unbothered, completely indifferent to my suffering, informed me that the number I was dialing did not exist. She even had the audacity to suggest I "check the number and try again." As if trying again would somehow bring back my lost Friday plans.

I tried again. She repeated herself. Reality hit me: my perfect business opportunity had just been obliterated by an incorrect number.

And worse? I had only gotten his first name. No email, no company name, no LinkedIn, nothing. There wasn't even enough information for a full-blown FBI investigation.

Desperate Times, Desperate Measures

I refused to accept defeat. Fueled by sheer rage and desperation, I grabbed my lead list and started dialing every single number I had. For the next three hours, I was on the phone. Not. A. Single. Bite.

In the midst of my calling frenzy, I kept getting call waiting signals, but I ignored them, laser-focused on salvaging something from the wreckage of my Monday. I'd call them back later.

The Painful Twist

Fast-forward a year later at another event. I bump into Mr. Client. We laugh about the number mishap, and he finally gives me his real number. But then, he casually drops a bombshell:

"I actually called you on Monday morning. Several times. But your line was busy. I figured since you didn't get back to me, you just weren't interested in my business."

Let that sink in. All those missed calls? They were him. I had lost the deal because I was too busy chasing new leads instead of waiting, reflecting, and following up.

The Lesson

Wait. When things don't go according to plan, don't just react, pause. Take a moment to reflect before you rush into damage control. Sometimes, in our eagerness to fix things, we miss the very solution we're looking for.

Useful? Now score the brand behind the business.
